The plan had some fascinating and far-out elements. Now, drawing on recently declassified documents in the United States, Britain, and former Yugoslavia, The Forgotten 500 brings Halyard into the revealing light of day. The dialogue is evocative and even amusing at times but it’s the laid-back soundtrack (sold separately too) of composer Michal Michalski that really lingers in the mind.įorgotten Fields interjects a few puzzles and even quicktime events among the narrative beats but they feel almost disconnected from the story, not least because of the awkward animations where characters can sometimes get stuck on scenery. Forgotten Fields follows a struggling writer as they take some time to go back to their childhood home before it’s sold, exploring the feelings stirred up in the process. It was stored mainly in top-secret files and the minds of the men who experienced it. Though notionally a point’n’click adventure, it really involves lots of reminiscing with friends and family, talky exposition and aimless wandering as Sid tries to square the circle of remembering and forgetting. Writer’s block weighs heavily and it’s on this day that his mother summons him to the family home for one last dinner before it’s sold. Sid has one published fantasy novel under his belt but now faces a midnight deadline to produce the outline of his next. With the urgency of an old man walking around every market stall, with no intention of purchasing anything, hands behind the back and all, I leisurely played through Forgotten Fields with all the time in the world. This is not to be disparaging of FF’s good intentions but rather to set expectations of what is required of the player. Well worth a watch - and not full of tortured animals as others have suggested - but more a considered look at life within an isolating rural community.
